Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Comments

The English opening batter Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with comments from skipper Stokes regarding the dressing room as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder made this message in several conversations in the wake of his team's defeat in the second match of the Ashes series against the Australians earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where England now face defeat at the earliest opportunity, Stokes noted he had allowed his sentiment to "circulate freely" among the playing group.

"I have completed the necessary discussions in recent days that I required," remarked the England leader.

But, after the opener made 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take anything stated in the press with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

The captain made the "fragile individuals" comment subsequent to England were beaten in Brisbane to fall two matches behind.

The team subsequently went on a break to a Queensland resort between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Before the Adelaide contest, he said his team had held "honest" talks and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to stay in contention in the series.

Nevertheless, Crawley stated the guidance from the captain and coach McCullum had stayed consistent with their previous tenure in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, unchanged," noted Crawley. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with great liberty. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat entering this game."

Australia Close of Historic Ashes Triumph

Crawley's dismissal on day four was part of a crucial three-wicket burst by Australia spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Stokes himself – meant England six down for 207 chasing a daunting total of 435.

Consequently, Australia require just four more wickets on the last day to secure an insurmountable 3-0 lead with three matches played.

A loss will extend England's drought in Australia to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth straight away Ashes defeat.

The current battle is set to be decided in only 11 days of cricket – after England fell the first two Tests in two and four days each.

Not since 1921, when the Australians completed victory in England in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been decided so quickly. The hosts have also won in eleven days on two other instances in the modern era.

"This is disappointing," admitted the batsman. "We came here to win the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel now."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we will certainly approach it with that mindset," he continued.

"The challenge has been tough. Australia is a formidable team. It was always going to be hard coming here against them. They entered as the front-runners coming in to it they've proven why."

Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

While the opener's innings in the third Test likely secures doubts about his immediate place in the side, Pope appears under threat for his spot in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 in the team's second innings on day four, adding to his modest returns against Australia.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has failed to score a half-century and averages 17.62.

Only one other England player in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in the Ashes and recorded a poorer average.

But, Crawley said any notion his teammate is under the microscope comes from "the media" – meaning the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"We all know how good of a player he is," added Crawley. "He has had a good year if I'm honest."

"He has played several excellent innings. This is talk from the outside. There is no chat like that on Ollie in the camp," he finished.
